Lawless San Luis Walking Tour

October 26 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join architectural historian James Papp for a 2-hour walking tour through downtown San Luis Obispo. The mission fathers came with an ideal of imposing a new moral order on Alta California, but murder, arson, banditry, and confidence trickery followed in their wake. We take a walk on the town’s wild side, starting with the crimes of the Mission Era and continuing with the clashes of the Mexican and American periods, which created the stories of Joaquin Murrieta, Jack Powers, and…

Victorian Houses, Wild West Lives Walking Tour

October 27 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join architectural historian James Papp for a 2-hour walking tour through downtown San Luis Obispo. San Luis Obispo transformed in the 1870s, when the new Pacific Coast Railway made redwood transported by coastal schooners easily available here. Wood fantasies in the Gothic, Italianate, Romanesque, Stick, Eastlake, Aesthetic, and Queen Anne styles popped up; exotic gardens flourished; gas was manufactured, water installed, furniture imported; and advertising boomed. Yet we were still a Wild West town of violence, epidemics, and culture wars.…

Modern Masters and California Craftsman Walking Tour

October 29 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join architectural historian James Papp for a 2-hour walking tour through downtown San Luis Obispo. Little San Luis, equidistant between San Francisco and Los Angeles, attracted some of the best architects from both, who gave us some of their most unusual work. Greek and Roman Revival interpreted through Streamline Moderne, Colonial Revival in stucco and tile, and Mission Revival to mark the new motor age are some of our inspired oddities. We’ll visit elegant works by Frank Lloyd Wright and…
